Donaire predicts Filipinos’ win
Nonito Donaire, the heir apparent to Manny Pacquiao, is looking forward to a victory celebration soon as two Filipino fighters figure in world title fights this Sunday in Mexico and Puerto Rico.
Donaire said Marvin Sonsona should take care of Wilfredo Vazquez when they clash for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-bantamweight crown in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
“I have seen Vazquez in action and he lets himself open whenever he gets inside,” said Donaire. “Marvin’s going to catch him when he does that.”
Another Filipino puncher, Rodel Mayol is staking his World Boxing Council (WBC) light-flyweight title against veteran Omar Niño Romero in Guadalajara, Mexico, and Donaire believes in Mayol’s skills.
During Saturday’s official weigh-in, Sonsona came in at 121 ½ lbs, while Vazquez tipped in exactly at 122.
Over in Mexico, Mayol stepped in at 107 ¾ lbs, while Romero scaled in at the division limit of 108.
Donaire, the World Boxing Association (WBA) interim super-flyweight titleholder, also noted that the presence of his father Nonito Sr. in Sonsona’s corner is going to work wonders.
“I know that my dad is one of the best trainers,” said Donaire, shielding his father from criticisms brought about by the devastating knockout loss suffered by young Filipino Ciso Morales recently in Las Vegas.
Morales, who was knocked out in less than a round by seasoned Mexican Fernando Montiel, had Nonito Sr. in his corner but was pathetic, having been counted out by the referee after absorbing a body blow.
