Curious IT

It is hard not to take notice of the political circus going on. With all the major TV networks doing their incessant coverage of the politicians’ antics and gimmickry, it is indeed quite difficult to escape the election fever that has gripped the nation.

Not that there are things we would rather do than be sedate and unwilling recipients of the politicians’ inanity and thick-skinned, on-your-face declarations of their fitness to be elected as leaders of this unwell country. They make us suffer with their unpleasant and horrific tales and lie; let us get even by exposing them for what they truly are.

And come Election Day in May, let them know what we think they are.

Apple’s Moral Crusade

In a move likely to be equated with those by early moralists, Apple began purging its online App Store of applications that had anything to do with sex. The company has made known its ban on iPhone and iPod Touch applications that “verge on impropriety and indecency.”

Some applications developers, however, are not happy with Apple’s suddenly discovered love for a risqué-free online store. Some observers claim that Steve Jobs and company are overdoing their campaign, which has resulted in the deletion of applications that include bikini models.

While some anti-smut corners are lauding Apple’s move, some rights activists are claiming that the company’s purging of its online store suggests a deeply seated totalitarian tendency. From purely business point of view, however, Apple is merely doing something that it can. That comes with being the top dog in the online apps world.

Android Getting Hotter

Google’s Android mobile operating system is now running on at least 26 mobile phone models. The Internet search giant also claims that about 60,000 android phones are sold every day. Android’s share of the U.S. smartphone market may be relatively miniscule. However, it has doubled in 2009 to 3.5%. If it continues growing its market share at this present rate (and that is quite a big if), Android would soon become one of the leading mobile operating systems in the market.

Ka-Bloom! Energy

Secretive start-up Bloom Energy recently unveiled its fuel cell technology the company claims will soon provide humans with cheap, non-polluting energy. The public launch, which was graced by some heavyweights both from the business and government sectors, highlighted the Bloom fuel cells that are made from silicon, an element found in sand.

While fuel cell technology is not actually novel (it dates back to the middle of the 19th Century), Bloom eliminated the need for precious metals, such as platinum. Bloom fuel cells can use many kinds of fuel, allowing users to utilize whatever is available locally.

The company says it may take at least a decade to develop the technology into something that ordinary consumers can afford and use in their homes.
