OUT OF THIS WORLD: Viet man may have had world's longest hair

HANOI (AFP) – A Vietnamese man who died last week and whose hair was so long it resembled a boa constrictor, may have had the world’s longest mane.
The exact length of Tran Van Hay’s unwashed hair was unclear but the Vietnam News said it was 6.8 meters long (over 22 feet). The Thanh Nien daily said Hay’s matted locks were measured at 6.2 meters in 2006.
China’s Xie Qiuping is on record as having the world’s longest hair, measured at 5.6 meters in 2004, according to the website of Guinness World Records.
Hay, who dies last week at the age of 79, began to let his hair grow more than 50 years ago because he often got sick after a haircut, the Vietnam News quoted his wife, Nguyen Thi Hoa, as saying.
Reports said no motorcycle taxi would carry him because he could not wear a helmet. In the daytime he balanced his hair on his head like a basket, protected by a scarf.
Newlyweds spend first night in separate jail cells
HYANNIS, Massachusetts (AP) – A newlywed Massachusetts couple spent their wedding night in separate jail cells after police said the bride tried to run over an old flame of the groom.
Police say 22-year-old Hyannis resident Marissa Ann Putignano-Keene tried Monday to run over the other woman and the woman’s son in a parking lot. The intended victim later told police that she had previously been in an intimate relationship with the groom.
Police say the couple got married at Barnstable Town Hall and split a bottle of Champagne afterward.
The bride was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Her husband, 37-year-old Timothy Keene, was riding in the car with her and was charged with disorderly conduct.
Both were released Tuesday. It was unclear if either had hired an attorney.
Hormone havoc turns male frogs into females
A herbicide is being eyed as the reason some male frogs have developed reproductive systems and the ability to lay eggs.
According to a report by the Washington Post, a study published by a group of scientists from the University of California at Berkeley, tagged the herbicide “atrazine” as the cause behind the frogs’ shift in gender, and has resulted in male frogs’ radical transformation, converting their testosterone into estrogen. The hormone havoc also gives the male frogs the ability to mate and lay viable eggs.
The result of the study has sparked serious debate over what chemical qualifies as “safe” for people and animal habitats as other research groups had seen evidence that the chemical can demasculinize — and in some instances feminize — exposed animals. (source: Washington Post, ScienceNews)
Sauce bottle assault
FLORENCE, Alabama (AP) – Police said a 38-year-old man was charged with beating another man at a motel with a sauce bottle and a fire extinguisher. Police said the suspect was being held at the Lauderdale County Jail on $6,000 bond on charges that he attacked a 43-year-old man who was returning to his motel room.
Officers said that as the man opened the door to his room Wednesday night, the suspect hit him on the head with a bottle of Worcestershire sauce, then grabbed a fire extinguisher and hit him on the head and face.
Officials at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital said the victim was treated in the emergency room and admitted to the hospital, where he was listed in good condition.
