Amit falters but stays in contention

After pounding out consecutive victories, Rubilen “Bingkay” Amit hit a snag Friday, bowing to Taiwan’s Yuan Chun-Lin, 7-5, in the 2010 Amway World Pool Association (WPA) Women’s World 9-Ball Open at the Core Pacific Living Mall Hotel in Taiwan.
Despite the setback, the 28-year-old Cebu native, who is looking for her second world title after her world 10-ball championship conquest in Manila last year, remains in contention with a 2-1 card in Group E.
A University of Santo Tomas accounting graduate, Amit, however, could not afford to drop her last two outings in the single round eliminations to advance into the Top 24 knock out stage.
Also the reigning world mixed doubles titlist with pool legend Efren “Bata” Reyes, Amit launched her campaign on Thursday with a trouble-free win against Maureen Seto of Canada, 7-1, before thumping Kynthios Orfanidis of the Netherlands, 7-4.
Amit will next face Taiwan’s P.C. Lin and WPA no. 1 Karen Corr in Group E of the stage match which is divided into eight groups with six players each.
The stage match employs a race-to-7, single round-robin format where the top 24 players from the eight groups advance to the knockout stage, another race-to-7 affair.
