Peñaflorida and Dee: Hand in hand

CNN Hero Efren Peñaflorida continues his selfless vocation with the recent groundbreaking ceremony of a new learning center he is building in Cavite.
The "pushcart teacher" used his $100,000 cash prize from CNN to finance his life-long dream project, the Kalingain Batang Mahirap Learning Center.
Efren is hoping that with the facility, he would be able to not only provide education for the underprivileged street children but also give them shelter.
“It’s a learning center. It’s also a halfway house para sa mga street children. ‘Yung mga batang natutulog sa mga streets. ‘Yung iba, natutulog sa loob ng nitso, open tombs. So, instead na doon sa mga ganoong places sila matulog, at least they would know na mayroon silang lugar na puwedeng mapuntahan any time,” Efren explained in an interview aired on "Showbiz News Ngayon," March 8.
The young educator and founder of the Dynamic Teen Company was very grateful to actor Enchong Dee who accommodated his invitation to attend the groundbreaking ceremony. It is recalled that Enchong played Efren in the recent “Kariton” episode of “Maalaala Mo Kaya.”
"He really made sure na he’s here. Kagagaling lang niya sa Batangas, sa taping niya but he asked to leave early kasi may five o’clock rehearsal siya. Pero ‘yung presence niya, it’s more significant,” said he about Enchong.
Efren, who marked his 29th natal anniversary on the same date, made public his birthday wish.
“Sana matapos na namin itong learning center. We’re really praying hard [na makuna ha ‘yung funds na] inire-raise namin for the buiding,” he said.
Efren made a landmark in the field of volunteerism, championing the cause of street children in Cavite. Efren founded the Dynamic Teen Company at age 16 together with three of his friends.
This started him on the concept of “kariton” education, which he then used to share knowledge to the less privileged as he made the rounds of depressed areas in Cavite.
