Gov't aid for Filipino casualties in Indian Ocean sinking assured --- Marcos

Marcos said this after the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) confirmed on Wednesday, May 24, that five Filipino seafarers were among the 39 crew members who died after the said fishing vessel sunk on May 16. In a tweet, the President extended his condolences to the bereaved loved ones of the Filipino seafarers and told the former that the government is ready to assist them. "Nakikiramay tayo sa mga pamilya ng mga kababayan nating nasawi sa tumaob na fishing vessel sa Indian Ocean noong ika-16 ng Mayo (We commiserate with the families of our fellowmen who died in the capsized fishing vessel in the Indian Ocean on May 16)," he said. "Nakaantabay ang ating pamahalaan para sila’y alalayan (Our government is on standby to assist them)," he added. Meanwhile, Marcos thanked those who came to the rescue of the fishing vessel despite the unfavorable conditions. "We also extend our gratitude to the Australian and Chinese search and rescue teams for conducting extensive operations in spite of the unforgiving weather," he said. On Wednesday, the PCG said they were in talks with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to discuss assistance for the bereaved families. “We are saddened by this development. Since day one, we have been monitoring and coordinating with the Australian Maritime Rescue Center and the Chinese Embassy as to the progress of the search and rescue (SAR) operations," PCG spokesman CG Rear Admiral Armand Balilo said in a statement. Reports said the vessel capsized at 3 a.m. on May 16. The nationalities of the other crew members were Indonesian and Chinese.
