Torres falters in world tilt
The streak of long jumper Marestella Torres came to a screeching halt when she faltered in the 2010 World Indoor Championships held over the weekend in Doha, Qatar.
Ranged against the world’s finest long jumpers, Torres finished only 20th out of the 21 qualifers after a mediocre jump of 6.06.
Her effort was a far cry from her personal best of 6.68m which she logged in the Laos Southeast Asian Games last year.
And worse, she was also beaten by the 17-year-old Lu Minjia of China who wound up 17th with 6.25 meters.
Naide Gomes of Portugal topped the qualifying with her 6.61-meter effort, followed by Darya Klishina of Russia and defending champion Brittney Reese of United States who both registered 6.52m.
Torres, however, sees a positive light in her participation in the world event sanctioned by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF).
”Playing against some of the world’s best jumpers is a good opportunity for me because you’ll learn their techniques and styles as well as their regimens before the competition proper,” said Torres, who is expected to lead the RP tracksters in the Asian Games in Guangzhou this November.
The final of the event which ended Sunday night saw Reese retaining her crown by submitting 6.70-meter score, followed by Gomes and Keila Costa of Brazil, who had 6.67m and 6.63m, respectively.
