Robredo hopes new ICAD co-chair makes use of her findings in anti-drug campaign

Vice President Leni Robredo hopes the new Inter-agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs (ICAD) co-chair who succeeded her will admit the failures of the drug war and make use of her findings to improve the campaign.
Vice President Leni Robredo
(OVP / MANILA BULLETIN) Interviewed after the turnover of two classrooms in Tanay, Rizal, Robredo said she hoped newly-appointed ICAD co-chair Dante Jimenez will implement an evidence-based and data-driven campaign against illegal drugs. “Mahabang panahon, three years, na ginawa iyong kampanya against illegal drugs nang hindi klaro iyong datos, hindi klaro iyong metrics, hindi klaro iyong targets. So ito, pagkakataon para wastuhin iyong pagkakamali in the past,” she said. (Three years is a long time for the campaign to be implemented without clear data, metrics, and targets. So this is an opportunity to correct the mistakes made in the past.) The vice president noted Jimenez has something to start with -- her report containing findings and recommendations on the government’s anti-narcotics drive. “Hindi ko ipagpipilitan iyong findings namin. Nasa sa kanya iyon kung gagamitin iyon (I will not force our findings on him. It is up to him whether he will use it),” she said After her brief stint at ICAD in November 2019, Robredo publicized a report that detailed how the three-year drug war failed to combat illegal drugs in the country. Citing data from law enforcement agencies, the former drug czar said authorities have seized less than one percent of the total supply of illegal drugs. Robredo also highlighted the lack of clear baseline data from ICAD agencies on the illegal drug situation nationwide. The vice president said she hopes Jimenez will address these problems, especially reducing the drug supply, as co-chair of the anti-drug body. “Sana iyong pagharap ng bagong responsibility, i-set aside iyong politika, kasi oras na politika iyong paandarin, wala tayong aasahan na kabutihan na mangyayari,” Robredo said. (I hope in the face of his new responsibility, politics will be set aside, because once politics gets involved, we can’t expect anything good to happen.) “Kailangan na lang mayroong maayos na programa para ipagpatuloy ito. Sana hindi masayang iyong mga nasimulan (We just need a good program to continue it. I hope what we started will not go to waste),” she added.
