Water near underwater pipe off Boracay tests positive for coliform bacteria

(photo courtesy of Boracay Wilson) (photo courtesy of Boracay Wilson) Charn Joon Park, 39, freelance tour guide and scuba instructor, in an interview with Manila Bulletin Online via Facebook messenger, said that a few days after the video on the sea turtle that was seen putting its head inside an underwater pipe came out and went viral, a team from the DENR undertook water analysis in the area and came up with the said result. Park recounts that he and a group of friends were on a leisurely dive, when he saw the sea turtle and took its video while it was swimming underwater last Thursday (September 18). He said that they dived to the same location twice that day, and on both occasions, they saw the sea turtle. Many netizens were moved with the scene wherein the sea turtle’s head was inside the underwater pipe, prompting many to urge the government to conduct an investigation. What was noticeable in the video was the yellowish slime that was coming out of the pipe, which some netizens speculated to be human waste. A few fishes, along with the sea turtle, were also seen feeding off elements on the pipe. Boracay Island was closed down to tourist for six months upon President Duterte’s orders and just a few months back was re-opened.
