Reigning NCAA champion San Sebastian bucked a shaky start to beat Jose Rizal University, 73-63, in the 2010 Filoil Flying V Tanduay First Five Preseason Invitational Cup Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Coming off a two-week break that saw some of the Stags lead Excelroof to the PBL championship, the Stags leaned on point guard Pamboy Raymundo, Calvin Abueva, and Anthony del Rio to stave off an early challenge of the Heavy Bombers in the third game of the day.

The win enabled the Recto-based dribblers to keep abreast with UAAP titlist Ateneo and La Salle who hurdled their respective rivals.

The Eagles defeated San Beda, 84-73, while La Salle squeaked past Letran, 77-76.

"Nag-struggle kami nung first half. Medyo nagre-relax sila at may konting factor yung two-week break pero nakapag-adjust naman kami," said San Sebastian mentor Ato Agustin.

Raymundo and Abueva, the PBL Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP), tallied 15 points each while Del Rio added 12 points in the victory as the Stags overcame a 10-point deficit, 37-27, midway in the second quarter.

Alex Almario led the Heavy Bombers in a losing cause with 11 points while veteran lefty forward Marvin Hayes added 10 points.
