Senate Minority Aquilino Pimentel Jr. opposed Thursday the proposal of the Supreme Court (SC) to reconsider the granting of gun ban exemption for judges.

Pimentel said that he supports the Commission on Elections (Comelec) total gun ban policy because it would help neutralize any attempt to further sabotage the conduct of the May 2010 elections and maintain peace and order.

“I support Comelec’s gun ban even for judges. If judges are exempted, then why not lawyers or the rich or high-stake gamblers? It would throw RP back to US wild west where the fastest gun was law,” Pimentel said in a text message.

The High Court has urged Comelec Commissioner Jose Melo to seriously consider their request following the series of attacks against judges earlier this week.

Last Tuesday, the residence of Basilan RTC Judge Leo Principe was reportedly attacked. The next day, the vehicle of Manila RTC Judge Silvino Pampilo Jr. exploded in front of his house in Tanay.

But Pimentel countered the idea as it would be impossible to control gun owners and the result would be chaotic.

“If gun ban is relaxed then add journalists to the list of those entitled to carry guns and even dentists who pull the wrong teeth of their patients to make sure nobody is left out,” Pimentel said.
