‘Adam or Eve’ is no K-drama copycat, says Joy Cancio

Is there still such a thing as “original” nowadays?

Some Filipino fans of the popular series “You’re Beautiful” protest its striking similarities to “Daisy Siete”’s 26th and last season “Adam or Eve,” alleging that the Kapuso afternoon show copied from the Koreanovela.

In a phone interview with Bulletin Entertainment, Joy Cancio, manager of the Sexbomb Dancers and producer of “Daisy Siete,” said she had only learned of “Minami Shineyo” (Korean title of "You're Beautiful") last week. And the similarities? They are purely coincidental, she maintained.

“Natawa ako nung makita ko ‘yung sinasabi sa YouTube na gaya nga dun sa teleseryeng ‘yun. Natuwa ako kasi ang mundo natin, umiikot lang. Ang buhay ng tao, umiikot. Hindi lahat iba-iba. Halos pare-pareho lang ‘yan. And nagbe-base naman tayo sa realidad. Ito ‘yung nangyayari sa buhay natin eh, may mga factor na puwedeng may mangyaring ganito,” she said.

Enraged K-addicts swarmed YouTube, Facebook, Multiply, Twitter, and Tumblr with posts and comments of protest against “Adam or Eve.”

“Hate pages” on Facebook called “ANTI Daisy Siete's Adam Or Eve (COPYCAT!)” and “daisy siete's adam and eve: YOU'RE NOT BEAUTIFUL,” as well as a Petition page at petitionspot.com to boycott the show were also put up.

“You’re Beautiful” (also known as “He’s Beautiful”) is about a nun-in-training named Mi Nyeo who disguised herself as her twin brother and band member, Mi Nam, while he was recuperating from a serious accident.

K-fans allege that “Adam or Eve” has the same story, only that the female lead, played by Sexbomb Dancer Rochelle Pangilinan, is a church choir member.

Cancio noted that prior to “Adam or Eve,” the show has had stories about twins, such as “Tinderella” and “Kambalilong,” as well as stories about a girl disguising or working like a guy (“Moshi Moshi Chikiyaki” and “My Shuper Sweet Lover”). Then they had an idea to combine the two: a boy and girl twin where one will pretend to be the other.

In laying down the creative process, Cancio explained that she has submitted her synopses for 2010 to GMA last year. For stories, they usually research American movies, she said. After the brainstorming, the head writer [Suzette Doctolero for "Adam or Eve"]takes care of the script.

Cancio said she brought up the matter to Doctolero, whom she said didn’t have an idea about “YAB.”

“I remember ‘yung exact word niya sa’kin, kasi nga, ‘Uy, Suzette, bakit ganito, what a coincidence, may ganitong factor…’ [Sabi niya] ‘Naku Joy, ang tagal-tagal ko na sa industriyang gumagawa ng kuwento, napaka-imposibleng walang magkatulad na kuwento’,” she related, adding that the network is also aware of the issue.

Nevertheless, both Joy and the fans are aware of the deviations of “Adam or Eve” from “You’re Beautiful,” particularly in providing a “history” of the characters.

Whatever the K-addicts are saying—and that includes alleging that two previous seasons of “Daisy Siete” were derivatives from “Witch Yoo Hee” and “200 Pounds of Beauty”—Cancio maintained, “hindi kami guilty.”

“Nagtatrabaho kami eh, we’re giving entertainment to people. Ngayon kung meron silang ganyang opinyon, nasa kanila na ‘yun. We have freedom of speech.”

This is not the first time that “Daisy Siete” has been criticized. Cancio revealed that during the season of “Uling-ling,” she received a letter from a black American, claiming to be a book author, accusing them of promoting color discrimination.

“You have to watch the series, the complete TV series, para malaman niya kung ano ‘yung tanong niya. ‘Yun nga ‘yung sinasabi na don’t judge the book by its cover. Read it first, watch it, bago sila mag-comment,” she said.

Meanwhile, in one of “mytruestyle810303”’s posts, she said that the fans are addressing the issue not to degrade Philippine TV. They believe that Filipinos are innately creative and that TV networks should emulate this trait for the improvement of the industry.

“Hopefully, the call from K-drama fans will be heard by the Right people- I, with other Filipino viewers, hope for improvement in our local TV scene,” she told Bulletin Entertainment in a short cyber-conversation.
