Showing poise under duress, San Beda turned back Perpetual Help, 25-21, 25-15, 25-23, yesterday to clinch the first finals berth in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball at The Arena in San Juan City.
Top guns Nieza Viray and Cesca Racraquin combined with Sattriani Espiritu and setter Rebecca Cuevas in delivering the goods especially in the decisive set where the second-seeded Lady Red Spikers displayed steely nerves to foil the third-ranked Lady Altas.
San Beda, still searching for its first-ever women’s volleyball title, will take on defending champion Arellano in the best-of-three finals starting Friday.
The top-ranked Lady Chiefs proved too much for No. 4 Jose Rizal Lady Bombers, 25-13, 25-20, 25-17, in the other semifinal pairing.
Up, 15-9, in the opening set, San Beda went cold as Perpetual Help tightened up the defensive screws and charged back for a 21-18 lead capped by a Chinchin Gual hit.
Viray, however, found her groove in time as she provided the spark in the Lady Red Spikers’ seven unanswered points to help them regain control.
San Beda took a quick 12-4 advantage in the second set and looked headed for a cruise.
But just when everyone thought that Perpetual Help was down for the count, the Lady Altas came back to life in the third and led by as many as six points twice and still enjoyed a 17-14 cushion three quarters through the set.
The Lady Red Spikers were not to be denied though.
They forced two deadlocks, the second at 23-all, before Espiritu scored on a quick hit and Perpetual’s Jowie Versoza committed a grievous error.
“We are prepared for those kind of situations,” said Cuevas. “Sobrang speechless. Pero motivated talaga kami na pumasok sa finals kaya nagtrabaho lang kami. Itutuloy lang namin yung maganda naming ginagawa for the past few weeks.”
In men’s play, defending champion St. Benilde outlasted San Beda in a marathon showdown, 25-16, 24-26, 25-19, 20-25, 20-18, to keep its title-retention bid alive.
Up next for St. Benilde is No. 2 Perpetual Help on Tuesday, with the winner earning the right to face formidable Arellano in a best-of-three finals.
