The Philippine National Police (PNP) has started the security preparations for the country’s hosting of the 19th Edition of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Basketball World Cup 2023 from Aug. 25 to Sept. 10 this year.
PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda, Jr. said the event is not something new for the police force as they have been tapped before to secure major events, that include international sports competitions.
Such security strategy, according to Acorda, was proven effective in successful international events such as the 2015 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, 2015 Papal Visit, 2017 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and the 2020 Miss Universe Pageant.
“We will be implementing our tried and tested major events security framework for FIBA World Cup. The PNP is fully committed to the success of this prestigious international event. We are working closely with our partner agencies to deliver a memorable experience for everyone involved,” said Acorda.
He said the Security Task Force (STF) FBWC 2023 has been organized as the primary body responsible for conducting security operations and other related public safety services during the basketball event.
The 19th Edition of FIBA's flagship event, the FBWC 2023, will be hosted across three nations in Asia: the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia. The Philippines will specifically host participants from Africa, Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe.
With an expected total of 3,253 FBWC customer groups participating, ensuring a secure environment is paramount to the success of the event.
To kick off the tournament, the opening ceremony and opening games between Angola vs Italy and Philippines vs Dominican Republic will be held at the Philippine Arena in Ciudad de Victoria, Sta Maria, Bulacan.
Acorda Jr. has expressed confidence in the PNP's capability to provide a safe and secure environment for the 19th FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 event as he assured the prioritization of the safety and security of all participants, officials, and spectators.
