'Paeng' death toll now at 150, damage at P5B as more ground reports come in

The damage wrought by severe tropical storm "Paeng" to agriculture and infrastructure has ballooned to over P5.3 billion as the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) began to have clear picture of the extent of destruction based on the reports on all the affected areas.

In the latest data released on Thursday, Nov. 4, the NDRRMC also disclosed that 29 more people were added to the fatality list which resulted in the total tally of 150 "Paeng"-related deaths-- 94 of them were confirmed to be typhoon-related while 56 others are still for validation.

At least 36 other people are on the missing list while 128 were reported to have been injured.

Of the 94 confirmed deaths, 63 of them were from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), mostly in Maguindanao which was swept by landslides and widespread flooding, while 28 others were from Western Visayas. Three people were confirmed to have died in Central MIndanao.

Of the 56 deaths that are subject to validation, 33 of them were from Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon), while the rest are from 10 other affected regions.

Most of those in the missing list, on the other hand, came from Western Visayas and BARMM.

The affected population due to landslides, flooding and other related incidents was almost four million.

Agri, infra damage

Based on the NDRRMC data, "Paeng" left P2.4 billion worth of damage in agriculture, the hardest hit was Bicol Region with almost P860 million, followed by Calabarzon with almost P604 million, Central Luzon with over P443 million and Western Visayas with P376 million.

The listed damage includes crops, fisheries and agriculture machines.

For infrastructure, the NDRRMC reported P2.8 billion damage, the hardest were Calabarzon with almost P1.2 billion and Bicol Region with over P708 million.

Almost 500 roads were affected by landslides and flooding, a total of 172 of them were rendered impassable during and shortly after "Paeng" onslaught.

A total of 120 bridges were also damaged.

The NDRRMC also reported more than 15,000 damaged houses.
