CEBU CITY — Erring drivers in Mandaue City beware.
Mandaue has started installing cameras and other equipment in key areas as part of its implementation of its no-contact apprehension system.
The city’s Public Information Office announced that some cameras have already been installed on the corners of AC. Cortes and D.M. Cortes Streets and along A. Del Rosario Street.
Becoming the first local government unit in Metro Cebu to implement a no-contact apprehension, Mandaue partnered with a private company for a proof of concept and test the effectivity of the program.
Under the system, cameras and other gadgets will record violations committed by motorists. The captured violation will then be forwarded to the Motor Vehicle Registration Alert System of the Land Transportation Office (LTO).
A Notice of Violation will then be sent to the erring motorist, who will be advised to settle the penalty.
Unsettled penalties will be collected upon renewal of vehicle registration.
Mandaue Mayor Jonas Cortes said the system will help the city get rid of abusive motorists.
“Abusive drivers have no place in our city,” Cortes said.
“We did spend a single peso for this program but this will greatly help address the problem on undisciplined drivers plying on our streets,” Cortes added.
Cortes said further study will be conducted to determine if the system can be applied city-wide.
