The House of Representatives will concentrate on pushing legislative measures to support the “new life and new economy” as the country continues to face the economic crisis brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano called for public cooperation as government pursues new programs to cushion the impact of the pandemic’s adverse effects on the everyday life of Filipinos.
“Let us work together to aim, we have a target so we have to aim,” Cayetano told Pateros folk during a relief distribution operation he and his wife, Rep. Lani Cayetano, led on Saturday (May 23).
With only six session days remaining in the first regular session of the 18th Congress, the Lower House’s Defeat COVID-19 committee has started to deliberate on a number of pandemic-related responses.
For one, the chamber is reportedly eyeing the passage of the Philippine Economic Stimulus Act of 2020 (PESA).
Authored by Reps. Joey Sarte-Salceda (PDP-Laban, Albay) and Stella Luz Quimbo (LP, Marikina City), the bill seeks the allocation of at least P1.3 trillion for various economic interventions to be implemented from 2020 to 2022.
AAMBIS-OWA Party-list Rep. Sharon Garin, chairperson of the House committee on economic affairs, supported the measure as she underscored the need to address fears by many Filipinos of becoming infected with the coronavirus in workplaces and commercial areas.
Garin said this mentality will make it difficult for the country to rebound from the economic difficulties triggered by the pandemic.
According to Garin, the Lower House is eyeing massive testing to alleviate the “fear factor” being experienced by Filipinos.
