All hail the Fighter of the Decade, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao!

The Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) named the boxing champ as the greatest fighter of the last ten years (2000-2009), according to reports from ABS-CBN and GMA-7 on June 2.

Aside from this prestigious recognition, the pound-per-pound king will also be given the “Sugar Ray Robinson Fighter of the Year” for 2009, a third for the Pinoy Pride, having received the same honor in 2006 and 2008.

The award will be presented to him by no less than legendary boxer Joe “Smokin” Frazier, who was a recipient of the award himself back in 1978 for defeating Muhammad Ali.

“Excited na ako para makuha ‘yun (award),” quipped Pacquiao on “TV Patrol World.”

Pacquiao flew to New York on June 1, where he will receive the awards on June 4 at the BWAA’s 85th banquet awards at the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan.

With him are his wife Jinkee, his children, adviser Michael Koncz and second trainer Roger Fernandez.

The trip will also serve as a vacation for the seven-division world champ, who is now prepping up for his new duty as congressman of the lone district of Sarangani province.

During the past decade, the world bore witness to Pacquiao’s consistent victories inside the ring, knocking down the likes of Miguel Cotto, Oscar de la Hoya, Erik Morales, Ricky Hatton, and most recently, Joshua Clottey.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao’s coach Freddie Roach will be receiving the “Trainer of the Year” award for the fourth time.

On June 5, Pacman will watch the fight between his previous opponent Cotto and Yuri Foreman at the Yankee Stadium.

Koncz confirmed that Pacquiao would definitely have a fight in November, although uncertainty remains if the match will be between him and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. If the dream fight does not push through, a rematch with Cotto is said to be likely if the latter beats his opponent.
