The sights and sounds of Manila are better seen and heard, thus the advent of the (primarily) video blog wheninmanila.com. Ironically, the website's main man, Vince Golangco, is somebody who studied and worked in the US before he decided to travel the world and settle in the Philippines for the meantime because he fell in love with the country. He has another partner who handles the tech and admin for the site, and then Vince does the rest. Excerpts of our online interview:

Q. Your bio says you're a radio DJ for 94.7. What makes you find time to blog still?

A. I love writing and sharing my crazy adventures with my friends. I started blogging just to share my travels and worldly discoveries with my best buddies from San Diego (California). One thing led to another and next thing I knew, I had all sorts of people commenting in my blogs. In a way, my radio show is sort of an extension of my blog as I just go on air and talk about the wonderful people I've met and the cool parties and places I’ve gone to.

Q. Video must be the next hot thing for blogging, judging from the videos we see in your site.

Video is definitely the next wave. Many top ad agencies, online analysts and experts are predicting that video will be the next big push for the internet and blogging. For now, we still need the text part of blogging as that’s how you get found with search engines. Soon though, I predict there will be a way to find the content within videos and written blogs may not be as relevant as video blogging.

Q. Do you ever see blogging going out of style?

A. I don’t see blogging “going out of style” anytime in the near future. In fact, blogging hasn’t even taken full force yet. We may see a day when all entertainment, news, reports, photos and videos are all found solely on blogs.

Q. How important is monetization for a blog? Or would you rather get your fulfillment in some other ways?

A. You can really tell the difference in quality from someone who enjoys what they’re doing as compared to someone who blogs just to earn from it. On the other hand, once you enjoy what you’re doing with blogs, finding ways to monetize what you love can be the most fulfilling thing. I mean wouldn’t it be great to get paid for what you love doing? So it is important to monetize a blog, but only after you’ve found your passion in it.

Q. What has been your best blogging moment in Manila (and beyond) thus far?

A. Wow, way too many to mention. Overall, it’s meeting so many amazing people whom I would have never met had I not started my blogs like http://www.wheninmanila.com

To be more specific, I enjoyed sponsored travel to Boracay and got to go cliff diving there with some celebrities! It was an epic moment in my life and an unforgettable trip as cliff diving was one adventure I’ve always wanted to try but was also one fear I never thought I would overcome! Again, this happened because of blogging.

Q. What places, sights and sounds do you recommend for tourists and first-time visitors, when they're in the Philippines?

A. Wow, again that’s impossible for me to answer with just one sentence, so I’ll just mention some of my favorites. Surf in La Union, take “Drifting” lessons, eat at Zenses where they cook with Nitrogen, try cliff diving in Boracay, get a massage and watch a movie at the “Movie Theater Massage Room” at the BlueWater Day Spa.

Q. Please share with us your plans for your blog.

A. WhenInManila.com hopes to become a full-on online video channel. We’re also hoping to produce short films and fun videos that everyone can enjoy. We want to be sort of an online entertainment hub where you can check out funny videos and articles. Eventually, we envision ourselves as an online production house that would also produce videos and content for people specifically to be placed and marketed on the internet.
