Fariñas hits Marcoses' peace pact violation, swaps run for governor vs. Imee's son

Former House Majority Leader and Ilocos Norte Rep. Rodolfo Fariñas’ plan to retire from politics will be put on hold after he filed his candidacy for governor for his province, in retaliation to the influential Marcos family’s failure to comply with a “peace pact” with the equally dominant Farinas political clan.

Farinas, who allegedly declined a PDP-Laban nomination for senator, faces board member Matthew Marcos Manotoc, who substituted for his grandmother, former first lady and Rep. Imelda Marcos. Manotoc is the son of outgoing governor Imee Marcos Mrs. Marcos withdrew her gubernatorial candidacy a few days after being found guilty of seven counts of graft for allegedly funneling funds to bogus Swiss foundations during the presidency of her husband, the late president Ferdinand Marcos. Fariñas’ decision to challenge Manotoc was triggered by the alleged violation by the Marcos family of a “peace agreement” that enjoins both families from fielding bets against each other in the 2019 mid-term elections. “If they withdraw Ria’s and Chevylle’s opponents, I will withdraw, too, as I’d rather retire from politics,” said Farinas, who was Ilocos Sur congressman for six terms and governor for three terms. Ria is Fariña’s eldest daughter who has set her sights at replacing her father as congressman of Ilocos Sur’s First District. On the other hand, Chevylle Fariñas is the incumbent mayor of Laoag City and widow of Farina’s late nephew vice mayor Michael Farinas. While nobody from the Marcos camp challenged Ria, Chevylle will be facing oard member Michael Keon, nephew of the late president. “They were going to withdraw the opponent of Ria, but Keon’s running against Chevylle violates our peace agreement,” Fariñas said. According to Fariñas, the “peace agreement” between the Fariñas and Marcos families was reached between him and Bongbong, with both agreeing that Ria and Mrs. Marcos be allowed to run unopposed. “Chevylle had no serious opponent as she was, in fact, unopposed in 2016. Keon filed for Laoag SP (Sangguniang Panlalawigan) member but 10 minutes before the 5 pm deadline yesterday, he got an NP-CONA and substituted against Chevylle for mayor,” Fariñas recalled in a viber message to House reporters yesterday.
