Manila Sound celebrates 35th anniversary with Air Supply

The internationally famous soft rock duo called Air Supply will arrive today at 2 p.m. via PR 502. Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock are scheduled to perform at SMX Convention Center on Friday, June 25, and in Zamboanga City on June 26, and Tacloban City on June 28.
Their concert billed as “35 Years of Love,” another Steve O’Neal Productions offering, is actually a two-in-one show (for the price of one ticket!) as it will also feature Manila Sound Project with the special participation of Ciara Sotto at the SMX. The Manila Sound Project features artists, musicians and vocalists from the Manila Sound era. The music genre, like Air Supply, is also celebrating its 35th anniversary.
The Manila Sound was invented in 1973 by Hotdog, the Garcia brothers Rene and Dennis as head honchos. Dennis was the lyricist and Rene was the composer. Their music careers blossomed with the release of “Ikaw Ang Miss Universe Ng Buhay Ko” in 1974 (the Philippines then was the venue for the Miss Universe pageant). They churned out hit after hit and even starred in a movie about Hotdog. Three decades later and about a hundred personnel changes later, “Manila,” “Annie Batungbakal,” “Bongga Ka Day” and other Hotdog hits are still being played.
Besides Hotdog, a bumper crop of very talented and unique artists also emerged in the ’70s to comprise the Manila Sound genre – The Boyfriends, VST & Co., Cinderella, Hagibis, Hajji Alejandro, and Rico J. Puno.
In “35 Years of Love,” fans of the Manila Sound genre will get a preview of Manila Sound Projects production numbers that include “Annie Batungbakal,” “Bongga Ka Day,” “Awitin Mo, Isasayaw Ko,” “Katawan,” “Bato Sa Buhangin,” and “Manila.”
On the Air Supply’s part, they are expected to perform their international hit songs culled from about 12 Platinum Albums that they’ve churned in their 35 years of partnership. Among these songs are “Lost In Love,” “All Out Of Love,” “Every Woman In The World,” “The One That You Love,” “Here I Am (Just When I Thought I Was Over You”), and “Sweet Dreams.”
Air Supply’s “35 Years of Love” is presented by Circles Entertainment and GMA Network in collaboration with Dusit Thani Hotel, the official residence; Zest Air, the official airline; PCSO, Business Mirror, MS, Mings Pei Pa Koa, Jack TV 2nd Avenue, Basketball TV, ETC, St. Francis Square, Mall of Asia, Hard Rock Café, Sony Music, 99.5RT, Magic 89.9, Jam 88.3, Wave 89.1, IFM and RJ100FM, the official concert station.
Tickets to the concert are available at TicketWorld and outlets, National Bookstores, Robinsons Malls and Ayala Malls, or visit www.ticketworld.com.ph.

Las Vegas decrees ‘Julio Iglesias Day’
Julio Iglesias was honored recently by the Las Vegas International Press Association, which awarded him the prestigious “Outstanding Hispanic Award (Máximo Orgullo Hispano).” In addition, the city government authorities proclaimed that day “Julio Iglesias Day.”
The event took place last June 10, before the first performance of the artist in the Hilton Hotel and Casino.
Pablo Antonio Castro Zavala, president of Las Vegas International Press Association, stated: “It’s a great honor for our organization to pay a deserved tribute to such a living legend as is Julio Iglesias. His music has been played all over the world and has had an enormous impact on all languages.”

Luis to continue hosting ‘Wowowee’
Many fans of Willie Revillame from here and abroad have been inquiring as to when he will resume hosting the daily game show. We always say, “very soon, don’t worry he’s just taking a much-needed rest, but he’ll be back…”
Fans of Willie and the show are really hoping he will be back soon, because as most of them believe, “Wowowee” is not the same without Willie. Willie is “Wowowee” no matter what happens, it will always be his show. And so we don’t fault those who’ve lost interest in watching the show because Willie isn’t there. Still, ABS-CBN insiders say that ratings for the show has remained high and encouraging.
The temporary hosts (Robin Padilla among them) all did their best, and the show has somehow remained interesting and now it’s Luis Manzano who continues to host “Wowowee.”
