Garuda in talks for $1.5-billion funds for Boeing aircraft
JAKARTA, June 22 (Reuters) – Indonesian flag carrier PT Garuda Indonesia is in talks with the US Export-Import Bank for $1.5 billion of financing for planned purchases of Boeing aircraft, said Garuda's President Director Emirsyah Satar.
Satar said Garuda already had a contract with Boeing worth at least $1.5 billion to $2 billion to purchase 10 Boeing 777-300ER and 10 Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
''We're looking for a partner to finance the contract,'' he said. ''We're also in talks with several lessors to combine financing for the plan.''
Satar said that Garuda plans to open several new routes to Taipei and Shanghai this year.
However, after opening a new route to Amsterdam this month, the firm will delay further expansion into Europe until 2011 due to the euro zone crisis, local newspaper Kontan on Monday quoted Satar as saying.
Indonesia aims to list the flag carrier in a $400-million initial public offering by the end of this year, with the proceeds to be used to buy new aircraft.
Garuda has said it plans to add 116 aircraft, comprising 90 Boeing 737-800s, 20 Airbus A330s, and Boeing 777s to its fleet by 2014.
