Orientation set for new solons
World boxing champion Manny Pacquiao and other celebrities who will become members of the 15th Congress will be trooping to the House of Representatives Thurs to attend an orientation seminar on legislative procedures but the training program session may no longer include a “mock session” as previously planned.
Secretary General Marilyn Yap said they have not yet reached a final decision on whether or not participants to the seminar will undergo a practice legislative session. The decision will be made today.
Pacquiao was among the more than 100 neophyte congressmen who confirmed participation in the half-day program that will be held at the plenary hall of the Batasan building in Quezon City.
Ex-President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is not expected to join the orientation seminar, having been a senator and President before.
Like Arroyo, former Sen. Rodolfo Biazon, now a congressman representing Muntinlupa City, may no longer attend.
Pacquiao, who aired plans to defect to the Liberal Party, won as Nacionalista Party bet in the May 10 congressional race in Sarangani province.
Aside from him, other notable personalities in the class of 122 House members include entertainment celebrities Lani Mercado of Cavite and Lucy Torres-Gomez of Leyte. Also first time lawmakers are former San Juan Mayor JV Ejercito and top social worker Gina de Venecia, wife of former Speaker Jose de Venecia who will represent Pangasinan’s fourth congressional district.
