Responsive programs for OFWs pressed
President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III should press government agencies concerned with the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to come up with tangible results with lasting solution, Migrante said on Wednesday.
Migrante made the remarks after President Aquino issued a directive to the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE), Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and other OFWs-concerned government agencies to be “responsive to OFWs needs and welfare.’’
“We appreciate the order of the President for the Foreign Affairs Department and other OFWs-concerned government agencies to be responsive to OFWs needs and welfare,’’ said John Leonard Monterona, regional coordinator of Migrante chapter in the Middle East.
“But so far since his assumption to office, President Aquino has been issuing policy statements and directives to concerned government agencies about the welfare and protection of OFWs. We want actions now, not just words,” he added. What the government should do first, Monterona said, is to stop overcharging the OFWs and provide free social and welfare services to those on-site and their dependents. (Shianee Mamanglu)
