Effective flood control program in Valenzuela City

Valenzuela City's flood control program seems to be effective, if  Wednesday's heavy downpour will be the gauge, as no major thoroughfare was flooded and no lingering flood was reported in low-lying residential areas.

This was the assessment made Thursday by the city's Rivers and Waterways Management Office (RWMO) which is mandated by the city government to maintain and monitor flood control infrastructures in the city.

As of now Valenzuela City, which is practically a catch basin for the Meycauayan River, has three pumping stations in barangays Wawang Pulo, Collong and Tagalag, all located along the banks of Meycauayan River.

Engineer Rodrigo Perez, RWMO chief, said that floodwaters along MacArthur Highway easily receded after the heavy downpour indicating a free-flow of floodwaters through the city's drainage system.

Aside from maintaining the pumping stations, the RWMO will also declog and desilt canals as well as remove water lilies in all of the city's waterways.

Valenzuela City is not included in the multi-billion peso CAMANAVA flood control project, prompting the local government unit to seek from its own flood control program from the national government.

The national government, in turn, has announced the planned construction of another megadike project dubbed Valenzue-Obando-Meycauayan (VOM) which will also cover the Bulacan towns of Obando and Meycauayan.
