Top US senator Schumer cancels trip to Japan

TOKYO, Japan– A group of US senators led by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have cancelled their trip to Japan after visiting Beijing, Washington's embassy in Tokyo said on Tuesday.

"Due to external events, the delegation's trip to Japan has been cancelled," the embassy said in a notice.

Schumer announced last week the group was visiting China, Japan and South Korea.

The delegation's visit to South Korea was earlier said to be cancelled but it later emerged that whether Schumer would fly to Seoul was unclear.

The US embassy in Seoul and Schumer's press team did not respond to requests for comment from AFP.

The top US senator had met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday.

The cancellation comes after the United States said 11 Americans were dead and others are likely being held hostage by Palestinian militant group Hamas after its surprise attack on Israel.

Schumer is the latest high-level US official to visit China as Washington seeks to ease tensions with Beijing, which have flared in recent years over issues from trade to human rights.

Schumer said last week on X, formerly known as Twitter, that their trip "will focus on the issues of economic competition and security, American national security, and global leadership in advanced technology".
