‘Basyang’ deaths now 65

30 hurt, 87 still missing

The casualties from the onslaught of typhoon “Basyang” (international code name “Conson”) continue to rise, with the official death toll now 65 with 30 injuries, while 87 remained missing based on the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) bulletin as of Saturday afternoon.

The number of affected population also increased to 46,647 families or 231,620 persons from 660 barangays of 13 cities and 84 municipalities in 12 provinces of Central Luzon and the Bicol region and in Metro Manila.

The estimated cost of damage to infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, and schools, on the other hand, is P188 million, infrastructure for P114,655,000, and agriculture, P73,417,600.

Of the 65 dead, most were in Region 4-A (Southern Luzon) with 38, while 16 were in Region 3 (Central Luzon), and 11 in Region 5 (Bicol).

On other hand, most of the missing people are in Bicol region with 47, while 33 are in Southern Luzon, six in Central Luzon, and one in Region 6.

Twenty-three of the 30 injured were also from Southern Luzon, four from Bicol region, and two in Central Luzon.

The NDCC said that based on reports of the local police in San Antonio and Subic, Zambales, four fishermen who are residents of Barangay Calapacuan, Subic, Zambales, were found alive last Friday in Barangay San Miguel, San Antonio. They were identified as Melchor Valdez, 41; Alberto Zamora, 55; Direck Arsenal, 39; and Aquilino Abuga.

Three other fishermen – Boy Gomez, Liclic Chavez, and Rolly Ayala, all of Barangay Calapandyan, Subic, Zambales – were also found alive in Sitio Agnaem, Barangay Pundakit, San Antonio, Zambales.

The NDCC said the Philippine Air Force (PAF) with search and rescue (SAR) teams were deployed in Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur to augment local search and rescue operations.
