Singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid is saddened by reports that his composition “Pangako,” which was used as theme song in the movie “Pangako... Ikaw Lang” starring his girlfriend Regine Velasquez and Aga Muhlach, was allegedly pirated in Korea.

Korean singer Jang Hye Jin sang a version of “Pangako” titled “For Your Love” allegedly without permission from Ogie. “For Your Love” was in the soundtrack of the 2002 Koreanovela “Glass Slippers,” which was dubbed in Filipino and was shown here on GMA-7.

Ogie explained on “Showbiz Central” how he came to know about the Korean version of his song.

“Yes, I’ve been aware of it. Siguro two to three years ko na alam. Nalaman ko na lang thru GMA. Nalaman ko rin through [the] Internet tapos may nagsulat no’n din dati. Nakita ko sa YouTube. Hindi ko alam ang puno’t dulo niyan pero kung inyong papakinggan sa YouTube ‘yung Korean version, it’s exactly the same way that Regine sang it. It’s exactly the same way that the original arranger, who is Mark Lopez (arranged it),” Ogie said on “SC” on July 18.

Ogie was so disappointed by his discovery.

“So, nakakalungkot. We’re bound by laws, international laws and those things hindi dapat ginagawa ‘yon. Pero ‘yun naman ay ginagawan na ng paraan ng aming publishing company, which is EMI Publishing. ‘Yung publisher namin ang tumawag sa Korea. Siguro kailangang linawin ko uli publisher ko kung ano ang nangyari du’n dahil matagal na.”

Ogie points out that the international law prohibits somebody to copy someone else’s copyrighted songs.

“In like manner, for example, kung saan po tayo, hindi rin natin puwedeng gawin ‘yan, na mangopya ng kanta ng iba. I’m sure alam naman nila ‘yan eh. I’m sure alam naman ng kung sinuman ang gumawa niyan, ang batas. It’s a standard, it’s an international standard.

"The thing is, the world is very small, globalization na nga tayo kung tawagin so malalaman din. Kung tayong mga Pilipino sumusunod sa mga alituntunin ng publishing at licensing, sana, eh, sila din.”
