Pacquiao to fight Margarito – Arum
Tall and rangy Mexican puncher Antonio Margarito has been named by promoter Bob Arum as Manny Pacquiao’s opponent on November 13.
Only the city that will host the battle for the vacant World Boxing Council super-welterweight title fight is being discussed by Arum and the major players in the promotion.
Arum has pruned down the list to Las Vegas and Monterrey in Mexico although Abu Dhabi in the UAE and Dallas have also expressed interest in getting the fight done in their backyard.
Margarito is practically banned to fight in the US after California slapped him with a suspension for a handwraps controversy in a fight with Shane Mosley in 2009.
Margarito’s license was revoked after the discovery by Mosley’s trainer of a hardened substance in his knuckle as he was being wrapped by trainer Javier Capetillo in the dressing room.
Some weeks back, Margarito reapplied for a license in Nevada but was turned down and was told by the Nevada commission that he should first settle the matter with California.
Arum said he will ask Nevada for a one-fight license so a fight with Pacquiao can be staged at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
If efforts to re-license Margarito fail, Arum will bring the show to Monterrey.
The 5-11 Margarito (38-6-0 with 27 KOs), Arum noted, is an attractive foe for Pacquiao (51-3-2 with 38 KOs) owing to the Mexican’s ultra-aggressive style.
Pacquiao stands 5-6 and has a reach of 67 inches, which is six inches shorter than Margarito’s.
