Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin "Benhur" Abalos Jr. commended Friday, Nov. 3, the Philippine National Police (PNP) and local government units (LGUs) for the orderly and peaceful observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day or "Undas".
In a statement, Abalos acknowledged the Herculean task of maintaining law and order on Nov. 1 and 2 with an estimated three million people flocking the cemeteries to visit their departed loved ones.
"That is notwithstanding the fact that Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) were held on Oct. 30 (Monday), or just two days before the celebration of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day," Abalos noted.
"I extend the gratitude of the national leadership to all PNP regional offices and units, partner agencies, non-government organizations (NGOs) and volunteers for making this happen," the DILG chief added.
Earlier, Abalos called on the public to observe Undas 2023 with solemnity and mark it as a day for remembering and praying for their departed loved ones, and avoid drinking sprees and causing chaos in cemeteries.
He also reminded the public to observe established rules while visiting the cemeteries that include prohibiting the bringing of deadly weapons and intoxicating drinks.
In the past, people tended to have party-like celebrations in the cemeteries during Undas where gambling, loud music, smoking and drinking sessions were prevalent.
The PNP has deployed 27,000 police officers around the country while the BFP deployed 35,518 fire officers to provide motorist assistance and emergency medical services for this year's Undas.
