Six nabbed for wildlife trafficking
CAMP GENERAL MALVAR, Batangas - The Batangas Provincial Environment and Natural Resources and police operatives arrested six people and seized endangered species at a checkpoint in San Luis, Batangas last Sunday, July 25, 2010.
A report reaching this camp identified those arrested as Melchor Limlengco, Armando Ariola, Roderick Gabilga, Erick Dela Cruz, Jeffery Almendraz, and Gelfred Legarda.
Upon receiving information on the alleged transport of endangered species, the Provincial Task Force Kalikasan under the direction of Governor Vilma Santos-Recto, PENRO, the San Luis Municipal Police Station led by Inspector Comrado De Castro Jr. conducted a checkpoint along national highway in Barangay Muzon at 6 a.m.
Lawmen flagged down a suspicious Toyota Hi-Ace with plate number (TTL-418). On conducting a thorough search inside the vehicle,the team discovered endangered wildlife species placed in sixteen cages loaded at the back portion of the van.
One-hundred twenty-three live heads and two dead heads of Mynah birds; a matured and baby Palawan Leopard; one dead and alive Palawan Hornbill; forty-seven Heads of Blue Naped Parrots; and Palawan Bear Cat were recovered.
Suspects were brought in this camp after they failed to show necessary documents for the animals recovered.
They are now facing charges for Republic Act 9147 or Conservation and Protection of Wildlife Possession and their Habitat.
