So settles for draw
BIEL, Switzerland — Fourth seed GM Wesley So wisely stayed out of trouble and settled for a draw with GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam in the uneventful seventh round of the 2010 Biel Young Grandmasters chess championship Monday at the Congress Centre here.
So, who played white, and Nguyen agreed to split the point after only 26 moves of the Gruenfeld and less than four hours of play.
In the final position, So is threatening to capture Nguyen’s b-pawn with his rook which would equalize the materials on the board. Both players would have a queen, two rooks, the same-color bishop and four pawns each when they agreed to a standoff.
All the four other matches in this 10-player, all-GM tournament also ended in draws, leaving the overall standings unchanged. The 16-year-old Filipino champion remains in a tie for second to sixth places with four points, half a point behind Caruana.
