Buoyed by its lopsided win over archrival Letran the last time out, San Beda College shoots for the solo lead when it tangles with the winless University of Perpetual Help this Wednesday in the 86th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Red Lions caught the Knights off-guard with their defensive effort that paved the way for their 77-60 win, and they hope to do the same thing against the Altas (0-5) in their 4 p.m. match.
The Lions, the losing finalists last season, are looking for their fifth straight victory that will move them ahead of idle San Sebastian College, the defending champion.
Rather than flaunt their offensive might, the Lions employed a full court and trapping defense that kept the Knights out of their comfort zone.
College of St. Benilde tries to rebound from a stinging defeat in the first game at 2 p.m. against an Emilio Aguinaldo College side hoping to join the winners’ row after dropping its first three assignments.
The Blazers are expected to bank anew on the exciting rookie Carlo Lastimosa, nephew of former PBA star and Alaska stalwart Jojo Lastimosa, who exploded for 19 points in the team’s sorry 65-74 loss to Jose Rizal University.
Out to spoil CSB’s bid are the Generals, who are determined to turn their fortunes around after losing their past three games with an average margin of 31 points.
They lost by 10 to Arellano, (82-72) on June 27, by 42 against San Beda (97-55) on July 2 and by 40 against San Sebastian (106-66) five days later.
