Angeles City massacre suspect arrested

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga – A suspect in the killing of an American war veteran, his Filipino wife, and three household help in Angeles City was finally arrested in a follow-up operation conducted Tuesday afternoon in San Fernando, La Union, by  Angeles City police force.

Senior Supt. Danilo Bautista, Angeles City Police director, in his report to Chief Supt. Arturo G. Cacdac Jr., Central Luzon Police regional director, identified the arrested suspect as Mark Zamora Dizon, 28, computer technician, of Barangay Salapungan, Angeles City.

Bautista said that Dizon was arrested around 4:30 in the afternoon at San Fernando, La Union Plaza by his men, led by Supt. Elvis Diaz, CMG, and SWAT.

The victims identified as Albert Mitchell, 70, a member of the Veteran of Foreign War (VFW) stationed in Barangay Lakandula; his wife Janet, 53; and household help Isabel Fajardo, Marissa Prado, and Yulberto Vergara were found by crime investigators in different places inside the house on Manuela St., Hensonville Court, Barangay Malabanias in the afternoon of July 22.

According to police report, the victims were shot at point-blank range.

Probers said the lone perpetrator entered Mitchell's house around noon on Thursday and believed robbery may have been the motive behind the killings, since the culprit left behind what appeared to be goods taken from Mitchell's house.

Crime laboratory personnel who investigated the scene found several spent 9mm caliber pistol bullet shells.

Immediately after, Cacdac ordered the Angeles City police and Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) to bring all the pieces of evidence gathered from the crime scene and coordinated with the Composite Investigation Unit of the Philippine National Police in Camp Crame, Quezon City, for the cartographic sketches of the perpetrator.

Special investigation Task Group-Mitchell, headed by Bautista, was organized and convened on July 23 at the City director's office to discuss the follow-up investigation of the case.

The statements of the possible witnesses were taken and revealed the description of the culprit.

Manhunt operation was conducted by the Tracker Team of the Angeles City policemen against the suspect Dizon, who was positively described by the witnesses.

A background investigation conducted by lawmen revealed that Dizon has a standing warrant of arrest for robbery and carnapping issued by Hon. Judge Philbert Iturralde of RTC Branch 58 on January 13, 2005, docketed under Criminal Case No. 04-887-888.

Case build-up and consolidation of evidence and taking of sworn statement were undertaken for filing of appropriate charges against the suspect.

Cross-matching of recovered spent shells from the three shooting incidents in Oasis compound, Sta Maria Village, and Hensonville Court, Malabanias, all in Angeles City, were conducted and revealed that all were fired from the same 9mm pistol.

The culprit was arrested with the help of social networking site Facebook.
