Alliance to boost Cordillera growth
BAGUIO CITY — City Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan rallied potential investors to infuse their capital in numerous business opportunities in this mountain resort city which has been revitalized by the renewed partnership between the government and the local business community.
Domogan cited the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) and the Baguio-Benguet Chamber of Commerce and Industry for their strong membership which has played a vital role in the continuous economic growth not only in the city but in the entire Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).
He pointed out the concern of investors and local businessmen for a speedy processing of the necessary requirements to conduct business in the city is one of the primordial concerns by the new set of local officials so that the city will become competitive and regain its lost glory in terms of being a business haven.
According to Domogan, the city’s infrastructure will be enhanced with the support of the national government in order to improve mobility around the city and accessibility to the nearby municipalities of Benguet pursuant to the Baguio-La Trinidad-Itogon-Sablan-Tuba-Tublay (BLISTT) growth corridor to abate the rapid urbanization in the city.
He added the city government is aware that businessmen doing transactions want quick results because every minute counts for them, citing that the local government will review its existing policies and provide an avenue for them to be attune with the call of the times.
Previously, the city has set up a one-stop shop at the City Hall to hasten documents processing and that all papers are signed before he leaves the office everyday so that there will be no backlog for the coming day.
Domogan is strongly advocating for the realization of the BLISTT urban corridor being spearheaded by the Regional Development Council (RDC) in the Cordillera so that the business potentials of other municipalities near the city will be strengthened which will generate more employment opportunities and increase available sources of livelihood for the people.
The mayor, however, admitted that this city is now too crowded, thus, the need to expand the investment opportunities to nearby areas where there are available incentives that could be maximized in order to spark economic growth for the benefit of the people living in the said places.
At the same time, Domogan challenged the PCCI to continue providing appropriate assistance to their fellow businessmen who want to explore other ventures in the BLISTT so that more people will be able to be gainfully employed and prevent a possible stagnation of business and the concentration of development in just one area.
Aside from large-scale businessmen, the business group is now working its way to extend their support services to small and medium enterprises which could help in perking up economic growth as they continue to mushroom in the countryside, an indication that business is now alive in the city after a slump triggered by the onslaught of typhoons “Ondoy” and “Pepeng” last year coupled with the recent financial crisis.
