Industry leader Toyota Motor Philippines has revised its sales target for the year to 57,000 units from 50,000 units to account for 30 percent of the projected 170,000 total industry sales for 2010.

TMP vice-president Rommel Gutierrez told reporters at the launch of Alphard, Toyota’s newest and third van model imported a completely built-up vehicle imported from Japan, as the industry leader enters a new segment that has hardly any competition locally.

The 57,000 revised sales target is 23 percent higher than the 46,193 units sold in 2009 and 14 percent higher than its original target of 50,000 for 2010.

“We revised our growth target because of the upward trend in the market,” he said. The industry as represented by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. (CAMPI) has also revised its sales target to 11 percent growth from only 4 to 5 percent growth this year.

Gutierrez further cited that out of 13 product segments, TMP leads in six including Vios, Altis, Innova, Camry, Hi-Lux, and Avanza.

Its passenger car Vios and multipurpose vehicle Innova, both locally assembled, have been Toyota’s bread winner with a contribution of 12,000 units each a year or 25,000 units for both models.

Gutierrez, however, said they favor for a production-based incentives under the Motor Vehicle Development Program (MVDP) to encourage more local assembly.

The Board of Investments, which is administering the MVDP, is looking at localization of the auto industry. This means they are looking at more towards incentivizing the assembly of Philippine utility vehicles, which main criteria is a 60 percent local content.

The BoI, he said, is also modifying the PhUv definition to include Asian Utility vehicles.

Toyota’s Innova is its entry in the AUV category. It boasts of a local content of at least 40 percent. Gutierrez hinted of enrolling the Innova in the PhUv category.

Meantime, Gutierrez said that as of June this year, Avanza sold a total of 3,114 units, Fortuner with 3,300 units, Hi-Lux over 1,649 units, Prius 16 units and Camry 515 units.
