DepEd strives to enhance reading skills of students

The Department of Education (DepEd) urged teachers to continue exerting efforts that will help instill the value of learning among their pupils and students.
While the National Reading Month (NRM) officially ended in November, DepEd said that continuing activities geared towards reading can still be conducted by teachers in both public and private schools.

Part of the roster of activities for the NRM was the “Mystery Reader” wherein officials, directors, superintendents, and administrators were enjoined to read a children’s storybook in Filipino during the flag-raising ceremony.
Undersecretary for Planning and Regional Operations Jesus Lorenzo Mateo served as a “mystery reader” when he read “Ang Kuwento ni Binibining Repolyo” to Grades 1 and 2 learners of Oranbo Elementary School in Pasig City recently.
To officially culminate the NRM, DepEd-Schools Division of Cavite also led the nationwide, simultaneous “Araw ng Pagbasa” lastNovember 27. At exactly nine in the morning, all learners, teachers, non-teaching personnel, school officials, and guests at Diego Mojica Memorial Elementary School observed the nationwide synchronized reading activity.
Local government officials, district supervisors, and principals from various school districts also shared stories on how reading made a remarkable impact on their lives, and inspired schoolchildren to do the same. After the short program, they went to the classrooms and read a storybook to learners in all grade levels.
Angelika Jabines, Senior Education Program Specialist from DepEd-Bureau of Learning Delivery-Teaching and Learning Division (BLD-TLD), encouraged everyone to give books and other reading materials as gift to people who have yet to experience the joy of reading.
“Ang kayamanan ng libro ay hindi dapat itinitigil sa atin, challenge sa atin ito, i-share natin ang mga ito lalo na sa mga taong hindi pa nakararanas magbasa,” Jabines said.
Another highlight of the event was when Ronald McDonald dropped by to read a story to the children and hosted educational games. McDonald’s Philippines has been a staunch supporter of the Department’s endeavor to make every Filipino child a competent reader and writer.
With the theme “A Celebration of Arts and Culture through Reading,” the NRM was aimed at strengthening the DepEd’s Every Child a Reader Program and supporting the Department’s 10-Point Agenda focused on the delivery of quality, accessible, relevant, and liberating basic education for all. The birth centenary of Nick Joaquin, National Artist for Literature, was also commemorated for the whole month of November.
