The victim, Myriam Tagudan, was run over by a transit mixer truck driven by Hancyl Gilo along Kalayaan Avenue in Barangay East Rembo around 4 p.m., Makati Police said.
Tagudan is a resident of Barangay East Rembo, Makati.
Meantime, Agustina Dela Cruz, 73, who was also crossing the road with Tagudan, sustained a few scratches and bruises. She was rushed to St. Luke's Hospital in Taguig.
Maj. Gideon Ines Jr., Makati Police Investigation Unit chief and assistant chief of police for operations, said the victims were hit as they were crossing the road.
"They were sideswiped. The driver of the mixer truck said he did not see them crossing as they were at the blind side of the vehicle," Ines said.
"Then he ran over the teacher unknowingly."
After feeling that he hit something, the driver came down from his truck to check and saw a woman lifeless in the road in front of his vehicle.
Ines said there was no mechanical failure: "The brakes of the truck were all functioning. He said the mixer truck was very big, that was why he did not see the victims crossing the road."
Ines said Gilo is now under police custody. Police said he will be facing raps for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and physical injuries.
