Senator wants to revisit anti-hazing law
MANILA (PNA) – Senate minority leader Alan Peter Cayetano pushed on Friday for the review of the country’s anti-hazing law following the death due to hazing of a student from the University of Makati.
”I’m saddened that we have another victim of hazing despite our anti-hazing law. I think, we should revisit the law and how it is being enforced by our law enforcers,” Cayetano said.
Cayetano want also to know whether school officials are doing their part to prevent hazing involving their students.
”We have to check whether or not the school allows fraternities or sororities that conduct hazing as part of initiation ceremony,” Cayetano said.
Reports said that Karl Intia, a building and wiring management student of UM, died of hazing during an initiation ceremony of the Alpha Phi Omega (APO) fraternity. His body was reportedly recovered in Laguna.
”We also to know whether the past incidents of death due to hazing became effective deterrent. The fact that there are still reports of hazing, there’s must be something wrong with either the law or the law enforcement,” Cayetano said.
Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay Erwin Binay has already ordered an “immediate and thorough” investigation of the case.
