As the conduct of remote enrollment enters its second week, the Department of Education (DepEd) on Monday welcomed the partial turnout of enrollees in both public and private schools nationwide.

“We are very happy with the turnout so far,” DepEd Undersecretary Atty. Nepomuceno Malaluan said.
“With all challenges of remote enrollment done for the first time, we have over six million enrollees in first six days alone,” he said.
While these are still partial reports - as there are various levels of consolidation in the school, division, region and central office - Malaluan said that the initial number of enrollees for School Year (SY) 2020-2021 to formally start on August 24 is a very welcome development amid the public health situation in the country.
“To us, this means parents of six million learners trusting that DepEd can deliver learning opportunities to their children in a safe manner in time of COVID,” Malaluan said. “This means parents of 6 million learners willing to try blended/distance learning, and willing to work with us for the education of their children,” he added.
In both public and private schools across all basic education levels, DepEd national enrollment data for SY 2020-2021 as of June 8 showed that there are 6, 415, 867 learners nationwide who registered using remote or virtual enrollment starting June 1. Of this number, 6, 219, 447 enrolled in public schools and 193, 103 enrolled in private schools.
DepEd has set a month-long enrollment period this June before the new school year officially starts on August 24. The national enrollment data covers public and private schools as well as State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and Local Universities and Colleges (LUCs) and learners across all basic education level including Kindergarten, Elementary or Grades 1 to 6, Junior High School (JHS) or Grades 7 to 10, and Senior High School (SHS) or Grades 11 and 12. Also included non-graded learners with disabilities and those under the Alternative Learning System (ALS) program.
Based on the latest data, there are 346, 449 learners who registered in Kindergarten; 346, 449 in Elementary; 3, 152, 615 in JHS; and 704, 081 in SHS. Meanwhile, there are 14, 408 learners with disability who are currently enrolled along with 34, 529 enrollees in the ALS.
From Kinder to SHS, including ALS and non-graded learners with disability, the most number of enrollees were recorded from Region IV-A with 1, 283, 358 followed by National Capital Region (NCR) with 895, 406 and Region III with 772, 035.
For the first time, DepEd has decided to implement a “remote enrollment” system nationwide wherein the process of registering learners can be conducted without face-to-face interaction amid the threat of COVID-19.
DepEd said that schools shall conduct enrollment from June 1–30, 2020 for all learners intending to attend SY 2020-2021 - including those who enrolled during the early registration period in February 2020.
Enrollment not yet over
Meanwhile, Malaluan clarified that the partial turnout of this SYs enrollment cannot be compared with the previous years.
“For those who have been asking how the first five days of enrollment compares with historical enrollment for similar first five days, well you don’t have such a comparison,” Malaluan said.
Under normal circumstances, Malaluan said that Early Registration is for Kinder, Grades 1, 7 and 11 only. “For the rest of the grade levels, these are updated at start of school year already when students actually start attending school,” he said. Since enrollment is not yet finished, he noted that enrollment quick counts will become available by June 30.
As cited in the enrollment guidelines, DepEd stressed that during the first two weeks of June, “no face-to-face registration” will be allowed - thus, the schools were directed to “exhaust all possible means” to conduct remote enrollment.
DepEd reminded that all learners who cannot enroll using any remote method will be allowed in the last two weeks of June to physically enroll, in strict compliance of physical distancing and health standards, and in coordination with the local government units (LGUs).
