Slain Batangas mayor's daughter guns for father's post

By Lyka Manalo BATANGAS — The daughter of slain Tanauan City Mayor Antonio ‘Thony’ Halili filed her certificate of candidacy (CoC) seeking the mayoralty post following her father's footsteps. (LYKA MANALO / MANILA BULLETIN) Mary Angeline ‘Sweet’ Halili was accompanied by her running mate, lawyer Junjun Trinidad, their complete slate together with their relatives, friends and supporters when she filed her certificate at the office of Commission on Elections (Comelec)  at the Tanauan City Comelec Office. The young Halili said she wanted to continue what her father has done to the city, his projects and programs for Tanaueños. Thony Halili was assassinated last July 2 while attending the flag raising ceremony at the city hall grounds. Meanwhile, board member Alfredo Corona also filed his CoC for mayor as he will be finishing his last term as BM next year. Corona’s daughter, Mayor Jhoanna Corona-Villamor who succeded Halili, will run as board member in the 3rd district of Batangas. Corona joined by his running mate, Julius Platon and nine candidates for councilor together with their families and supporters. Corona said he and Halili’s daughter met and discussed his plan to run for mayor. The former Tanauan City mayor was unseated in 2006 after the Supreme Court favored the election protest of his rival, Sonia Torres-Aquino. Santos-Recto, Ermita-Buhain seek re-election bid Actress and lone district Rep. Rosa Vilma Santos-Recto and First District Rep. Elenita Milagros ‘Eileen’ Ermita-Buhain filed their CoCs for re-election under the Nationalista Party (NP). Santos-Recto was accompanied by her husband, Senator Ralph Recto and their supporters. In seeking a second term, she said she will keep on prioritizing social services for Lipeños , aside from education, health and employment opportunities. Buhain was joined by her father, former executive secretary and Retired General Eduardo Ermita, relatives and their supporters. Seeking a last term, Buhain said she will continue the scholarship programs and infrastructure projects in her district. Meanwhile, Batangas Governor Hermilando Mandanas under PDP-Laban, who remained unopposed as of this writing, was the first and earliest candidate who filed at the Comelec’s provincial office. Other candidates who already filed their CoCs were re-electionist 3rd District Rep. Ma. Theresa Collantes (PDP-Laban); Randy James Amo (PDP-Laban), Rodolfo Balba (NP) who are running for board members in the same district; and Consuelo Malabanan (PDP-Laban) for board member in the first district.
