Venus Raj proud of her ‘major, major’ answer
Miss Universe finalist Maria Venus Raj says she has another thing to be “majorly, majorly” proud of aside from her Fourth Runner-Up win: Her famous phrase during the question and answer portion made it to Twitter’s worldwide trending topics.
The Bicolana beauty is happy that “major, major”---the top four subject on Twitter a few hours after the Miss U pageant aired on Aug. 24---has also given pride to the country.
“Hahaha… wala lang natatawa din ako sa mga sinabi ko. Well, okay lang kung major trending siya. At least no, ‘yung 'major major,' nakapagbigay ng karangalan. O diba?” she told “24 Oras” on Tuesday via phone interview.
“Major, major” now also has a Facebook Fan Page, with over 2,000 “likes” as of this writing.
Venus admitted she got nervous during the Q&A when judge William Baldwin asked her: “What is the one big mistake you've made in your life and what did you do to correct it?”
Her response: "You know what, sir, in my 22 years of existence, I can say that there's nothing major, major, I mean, problem that I've done in my life because I'm very confident with my family, with the love that they are giving to me. So, thank you so much that I'm here. Thank you, thank you so much!"
“Siguro in-anticipate ko na kakabahan ako kaya kinabahan ako,” she said in recalling her answer.
She confessed to ABS-CBN in a separate interview that her mind sometimes goes blank when she’s on stage.
"Alam mo kasi pag nasa stage ka, may ganoon akong, ewan ko ba, may ganoon akong sakit sa katawan ko na pag nasa stage na ako hindi ko alam ang sinasabi ko,” she said with a laugh.
Venus did not capture the Miss Universe crown (Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete went home with it), but she was Miss Twitterverse. “Venus Raj” topped the social networking site’s trending topics at around 11:00 a.m. yesterday, and stayed there for quite some time.
Meanwhile, her answer elicited mixed reactions from Filipinos via Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.
Some were critical, as seen in these posts:
“WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING?!? DID YOU EVEN BOTHER TO PREPARE YOURSELF MENTALLY FOR THAT ONE?”
“She never did anything wrong her whole life?! whoa!? she's must be living like a queen in the Philippines.”
“Bakit mo naman kasi minamadali. Ma-iksi lang yung sagot mo at para ka nang maubusan nang oras. Nagmadali ka, hindi ka pa talaga sanay sa limelight. Mag-tanim ka na lang ng gulay sa probinsya dahil hindi ka rin puede mag-artista dahil hindi ka naman meztiza. Sayang...”
However, Pinoy pride still prevailed for many, who extended their congratulatory greetings to Venus online.
“Talbug ang ‘over na over’ ni melai [Cantiveros] sa "major major" ni Maria Venus Raj..” joked one.
Others defended Venus’ performance in the pageant, saying that although it was not a smooth journey, she gave it her best and made Filipinos proud.
“Napansin ko madaming naiinis kay Venus, wag nyo syang husgahan. Ginawa nya ang lahat para makuha ang korona nang major major. Maging masaya na lang tayo sa nakamit nyang pwesto. Ang 4th Runner Up ay hindi madaling makuha sa Miss Universe. Congrats Venus! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!” posted one Facebook user.
Many also saw Venus’ victory as a ray of hope for the Philippines after the much-publicized Manila hostage drama the day before the pageant.
“Venus Raj, you won our hearts! You brought back our hopes for the better Philippines,” wrote one.
Another one said: “Major major fail for the [Philippines] on international TV last night, Major major WIN today. Thank you Venus Raj!”
