Borgie Hermida just showed why he should be one of the top picks in the PBA Rookie Draft on Sunday.
The prolific guard Hermida came through with a rare triple-double performance as San Beda College repeated over Emilio Aguinaldo College, 92-68, to extend its unbeaten run to 10 on Friday in the 86th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Hermida, playing his finals year, fired 14 points, hauled down 10 boards and dished out 10 assists as the Red Lions recovered from a shaky first half to rout the Generals for the second straight time. The Lions scored a 42-point win (97-55) over the Generals in the first round.
“Borgie is a good player. He’s a PBA material. I told him that three of four days in the rookie camp is not enough so he should show his wares here (NCAA),” said San Beda coach Frankie Lim of Hermida, who scored his first ever triple-double effort in his four-year career.
In the second game, San Sebastian College played minus Calvin Abueva in the second half but still downed College of St. Benilde, 62-51, for its ninth victory.
Abueva’s his right ankle appeared like a ripe tomato due to swelling swelling after stepping into CSB’s Mark De Guzman’s foot with a minute gone in the second period.
The 6-foot-3 forward Abueva, who is the league’s leading MVP contender with a norm of 16 points and 12 rebounds per game, is confident he can return in time for their next game against the third-running Jose Rizal University (8-2) on September 1.
The Stags also missed their second best scorer in the high-leaping Ronald Pascual because of high fever, but they managed to prevail and stay at second with a 9-1 card – big thanks to the stellar efforts of John Raymundo, Edward Semira and Gibert Bulawan.
In junior action, the San Beda Red Cubs stayed on top of the heap by securing their ninth victory at the expense of Emilio Aguinaldo Brigadiers, 70-56, while the San Sebastian Staglets outscored the La Salle-Greenhills in the third period, 32-15, in posting a 74-69 victory – their sixth in 10 outings.
