Is your makeup bag bursting at the seams? Or are you just starting to wear makeup and wondering what to include and exclude?

Whether you are trying to clean up your makeup kit or trying to put one together, here are some basic makeup kit must haves.

Foundation. Foundation evens out your skin tone as it covers blemishes, freckles and dark spots. Foundation comes in liquid and cream forms. If you have dry skin, choose an oil-based foundation. Likewise, water-based foundation is ideal for oily skin.

Concealer. Concealer can cover those dark spots that the foundation can't cover.

Blush. Blush is also important as it highlights your cheekbones. Makeup blogger Sana Ansari recommends powder blush as it is easier to work with.

Powder. Powder sets the foundation and concealer and this is important for the makeup to stay longer on your face. Powder keeps your face matte, especially in very oily areas like the forehead and nose.

Lipstick. Lipstick adds color to your face. Ms. Ansari also recommends getting basic colors suck as pinks and browns.

Eyeshadow. Eyeshadow makes your eyes look bigger or smaller, depending on how you use them. Both Ms. Ansari and SafeCosmetics agree on recommending neutrals such as blacks and browns as they suit most skin tones.

Eyeliner. Eyeliner, outlines your eyes to make them standout. Like eyeshadow, it can create the illusion of bigger or smaller eyes.

Mascara. Mascara makes your eyelashes look longer and thicker, which creates the illusion of bigger eyes.
