Preparing your own personal first-aid kit
Few people realize the importance of having a first aid kit. But more people fail to realize the importance of having an updated one. Essentially, a first aid kit should be able to provide initial treatment to an injured person and give the owner quick access to supplies needed in common medical conditions.
While some kits are designed for specific places like your home, office or car, there are kits specifically assembled for certain activities like camping, hiking and travelling. If you’ve just recently decided to own one, the first thing to consider in having a first aid kit is to identify where it would be used.
However, since the essentials are the same, it would be best to have a first aid kit for general use – one that is handy and can be easily spotted when you need it.
The American Red Cross listed bandages and dressings, tapes, ointment packets, aspirin, cold compress, non-latex gloves, gauze pads, a thermometer and a first aid instruction booklet as some of the essential contents of a first aid kit.
Bandages and dressings go with adhesive tapes to cover scrapes and blisters. These would differ in sizes depending on the injury.
Aspirins and pain relievers can ease many forms of pain. Medicines for indigestion are also essential to treat common stomach problems as well as Paracetamol for fever.
Protective gloves can be used for the general purpose of first aid. Gloves can protect both you and the patient from possible transfer of germs and bacteria that may cause diseases and ailments.
Knowing one’s temperature is also important before administering first aid especially when you don’t have any idea about the patient’s condition. Before giving Paracetamol to a person whom you think has fever, it’s best to make sure by getting the person’s temperature first.
It’s also good to have blankets to provide comfort to a patient who is feeling cold. Scissors and tweezers are also important tools in your kit to cut tapes and bandages and get blisters out of someone’s skin.
When you’re not sure how and what treatment to apply in certain situations, a first aid instruction booklet would be very helpful in administering quick solutions to some injuries.
Having a first aid kit doesn’t end in stocking it. You should check the kit regularly to keep it updated. Discard expired medicines and check if the materials are in proper condition. Having a rusty pair of scissors is no use in times when you need to cut gauze to cover an injury.
