Rizal detention facilities need upgrade — PPO
RIZAL PROVINCE — The Human Rights Desk Officer of the Police Provincial Office (PPO) here bewailed Friday the state of detention cells in a number of police stations in this province.
Senior Inspector Maria Luisa Pedroza said she has visited six of the 14 detention cells of the police stations in the province and found that most of them are overcrowded and not conducive for human detention.
Pedroza said the lock-up facilities of the Tanay Police Station was the worst in terms of overcrowding as 28 detainees have to change sleeping places in shifts in order to accommodate themselves properly inside the small detention facility.
Supt. Felipe Abigan, the chief of police of the Tanay Police Station could not be reached for his reaction but his police community relations officer, PO2 Baby Imelda Alcantara told the Manila Bulletin that the jail facility is already set for transfer to a bigger location in the new building that is being constructed by the local government.
