Asiapro invests in Memphis trucking
Despite its status as the country’s largest worker cooperative organization, Asiapro Cooperative continues to dream big and innovate for the benefit of its members, where it scans the horizon in order to look for businesses with significant potentials for growth.
Two years ago, Asiapro Cooperative bought 50 percent of the shares of Memphis Trucking, a logistics company owned and operated by Reggie Llaguno, general manager of Memphis Trucking. Asiapro bought around 50% of the shares of company, with the remaining 50 percent still controlled by Llaguno.
Boasting of a fleet of 47 trucks and with Fresh Choice Always, a vegetable dealer, as one of its major clients, Memphis Trucking delivers fruits and vegetables from the depot to most leading supermarkets in the country. Although its activities concentrate on the transport of depot-to-market fruits and vegetables, it also embarks on logistical support to transport garments and semi-conductors within Metro Manila, Cavite, and Bulacan areas.
“Memphis Trucking is an Asiapro affiliate. Ultimately, we will establish our presence in Northern Luzon and in Mindanao in the near future.” President Gary Quemado emphasized.
The joint venture between the two businesses is now fully operational and it aims to build a trucking business franchise of 100 trucks operating nationwide 24 hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week.
President Quemado also stressed all of Asiapro’s intentions to meet its goals by building its presence in the trucking business and in agriculture (referring to another venture project called Agrilogx, a Division of Asiapro) which have high returns on investment.
“These two new business transactions undertaken by Asiapro Cooperative will give better margins for the Cooperative. As a result, it will double (hopefully) the dividends of the Cooperative worker-owners in the future.” according to President Quemado.
Asiapro’s investment opportunities, strong-membership base, and the provision of economies of scale in areas where it operates, strengthens its position of being the largest worker cooperative in the Philippines today.
Majority of the members of Asiapro Cooperative are drivers, individual contractors and maintenance staff, which consequently adds more value to the membership expansion efforts of the Cooperative enterprise.
