Seventeen years ago, "The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" made waves with it's high ratings and great merchandising and has spawned a series of other versions such as "Power Rangers Turbo" and "Power Rangers Lost Galaxy."

Saban, who originally adapted the Power Rangers series for the US market back in 1993, has reacquired the rights to the Power Rangers franchise from Disney. Their first order of business was to choose Nickelodeon as their new television partner.

Nickelodeon will air the upcoming 18th season of the Power Rangers franchise next year, while Nicktoons will air reruns of the series' previous 700 episodes.

And yes, that will most likely include episodes from "The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers," better known by the 90s kids as "the original Power Rangers."

It is also interesting to note that Stewart St. John, the story editor the first season and who wrote 30 of the original episodes is involved in the production of the 18th season of the Power Rangers. From the California Chronicle:

"I think the show is going to be just as big as it was that first year. It's obvious there are still plenty of fans," St. John says after speaking at the "Power Morphicon 2" convention last weekend. "Many of us were saying that we just can't believe what's happening with this whole 'Power Rangers' thing."

For the uninitiated, the Wrap summarizes the Power Ranger franchise:

The series – about a team of crime-fighting youngsters with deft martial-arts skills and funny outfits – was acquired by Disney in 2001 as part of the conglomerates purchase of Fox Family Channel, a deal that included Saban Entertainment and its library of kids’ shows.

To date, “Power Rangers” has aired in over 60 countries, while the property’s licensed products and promotions have generated well over $5 billion worldwide.

The Power Rangers' audience has since grown up, but it is safe to say that many will still gladly rewatch the series for old times sake.
