Patrombon loses twice in US Open
Jeson Patrombon took a tumble in his ambitious Grand Slam bid, dropping his opening-round singles and doubles matches Monday (Tuesday in Manila) in the US Open Junior Championships in New York.
Seventh-seed and world No. 7 Peruvian Duilio Beretta dumped Patrombon, 6-2, 7-5, in one hour and 13 minutes, then got another spanking in doubles play when Patrombon and his US partner Michael Zhu bowed to the French Open champion duo of Beretta and Roberto Quiroz of Ecuador, 6-4, 6-3.
It was an almost expected defeat for Patrombon who arrived just one day before his court appearance following the delay of his US visa. He also exited early in the Australian Open in January and at Wimbledon last June.
Patrombon goes home without a single ATP juniors point. Only those who make it to the round of 32 are granted points.
Next up for Patrombon are two tournaments in China, starting with the China Junior 2 from September 21 to 26 in Xiamen and the China Juniors from September 28 to October 2 in Beijing.
From China, the 17-year-old Patrombon will fly to Osaka for the Mayor’s Cup World Super Juniors from October 18 to 24.
