Looking for that Dream Job? DON’T Make Haste!
Choosing the right career path takes a lot of planning. Sometimes, for the lack of better options, most of us would stick with a job that is not highly satisfying as long as we are fairly compensated.
If you feel that you are likely to fall into this kind of set-up, or you are already in it, take a look at the following helpful steps in choosing the right career path for you before you start drafting your resumes or your resignation letters to get out of your current job.
Evaluate your present situation. – Identify what you dislike about your current situation so you’ll know what NOT to look for in your next job. Start with the things that you enjoy doing and depend on these for your search.
Think about your alternatives. – Widen your horizons. It is always right to think two steps ahead. Be sure to have more than two options at hand while you are currently planning to embark on your “priority” job.
Don’t base your options on whims. – Being whimsical in your search for the right career is not a very good idea. Imagine liking the thought of being in a glamorous job but not knowing how and what it takes to be glamorous. Remember, choosing a career is just one thing, doing the job is another.
Address your needs according to your skills. – Assess yourself. Identify the things that you can and cannot do. Think about the things that you are good at and start planning your career based on it. Maximize your skills.
Enrich yourself. – Having the right qualifications is a given for someone who is looking for a job. But being knowledgeable in other aspects aside from your field will make you a stiff competitor to the thousand others who are vying for your dream job. One tip is to undergo trainings, and attend seminars and workshops.
Find people with jobs that interest you. You can always ask them for pointers. Or, with the help of good luck, you could be his or her replacement.
Whatever career path you may choose, never limit yourself to what you already know. Since you would rather not be confined in a just okay job, I guess it’s safe to say that you will do everything to achieve that job you’ve been dreaming about for so long.
